Angelo Primo Uva di Troia Puglia IGT 2022
“Almost all the wine produced is exported, but our intention is to develop the Italian market,” says Angelo Paradiso, the owner of this well-organized winery in Cerignola.
Among the first historic wineries in the area to bottle wine, the winery is capable of producing wines crafted with incredible pleasure and is one of the few in the region to produce from Primitivo grapes in the historical area of Nero di Troia. Although the choice may seem unusual, it appeared to us to be spot-on based on the tastings, and in the glass, it is smooth and flavorful, showcasing the skill of the young winemaker Teodosio D’Apolito, who has experience with an important wine group in central Italy.
Characteristics
Deep ruby. An intense embrace of vanilla and cinnamon with balsamic tones and lively notes of black cherries, jujube, and aromatic herbs. A warm and rich sip, with appropriate tannins. Aged for 14 months in barrique.
Puglia is a gigantic limestone plateau that stretches for almost a third of Italy, holding the Italian record for coastline length: 762 km washed by the Adriatic and Ionian Seas.
Puglian wine typically means wine that is moderately good and economical, suitable for everyday meals. However, in recent years, this rule has seen exceptions with wines that have refined stylistically, moving towards greater clarity and finesse, starting with Rosé wines, which have been significantly produced here since the 1940s. In red wines, while Sangiovese production remains significant, grape varieties like Primitivo and Negroamaro have managed to establish their own territorial identity, surpassing Montepulciano in terms of cultivated hectares, followed by Malvasia Nera and Nero di Troia, which is predominantly grown in the northern part of the region.
Three important red grape varieties—Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Uva di Troia—are managing to give a good image of originality to the region, although enthusiasts sometimes still lament the lack of a precise territorial identity during tastings.
THE WINE
Vinification in purity results in a wine with an intense ruby-violet color, featuring intensely fruity aromas (with notes of currants, cherries in alcohol, berry jam, and cooked plums) and elegantly spiced, finishing with sweet tobacco aromas. The palate is of great concentration yet smooth and balanced, with velvety fruit strengthened by a pronounced alcoholic content. The wine improves its characteristics if subjected to appropriate aging. Traditionally, the types Dolce Naturale, Liquoroso Dolce, and Liquoroso Secco are also produced, which have a significantly high alcohol content (from 16 to 18 degrees) and require long aging.
